It is not a statement just to attract attention, but is brutally honest. With all management books that are written keeping only the managers in mind, here is one which views from the side where most employees are, in the 'cubicle' space. Many statements that Adams makes might look ridiculous and be easily dismissed but it definitely conveys serious meaning. Being a cartoonist, his prescription at the end is very simple, actually that is all what is needed, not the verbose and voluminous pages that are stuffed in many management books, with incredible 'research' put in. An author with witty humor and a self-deprecating style is a welcome relief and his dig at every management fad is what the 'employee' in the reader would have wanted to voice. It is a must read and to be followed, not just as a way of work, but a way of life itself, learning to laugh at ourselves being the idiots we are, and understanding the reality behind the parody of the corporate world. The mails Adams got from his readers bear testimony to its relevance. No wonder it is a recommended reading in many top business schools. These are the round-ups of my favorite sports.

Cricket : With India's pathetic display against Bangladesh costing it the World Cup, its tour of the latter was viewed with skepticism. But they achieved what they were supposed to, zero loss record and a series victory each in the test and one day series. Dinesh Karthik was the new find, with his excellent batting display. England hammered the West Indies to their greatest test loss ever, in the 2nd test of the nPower test series. Ryan Sidebottom made a memorable comeback with 8 wickets in the match. The West Indies without Lara look pathetic.

Soccer/Football : Several winners emerged in the European football circuit. Manchester United clinched the EPL but with a rather forgettable loss against West Ham United. Chelsea avenged their EPL title loss by defeating Man U in the FA Cup final. AC Milan were crowned European Champions when they ensured that the 2005 final re-match with the Reds was only a memory. Inzaghi scored twice and there was no comeback from Liverpool this time save a lone goal in the end. Sevilla captured the UEFA cup in an all-Spanish final against Espanyol. Real Madrid look tantalizingly close to their SPanish League title, with Barcelona breathing down their necks.

Tennis : Roger Federer started out the month with his worst form in recent times, having gone 4 tournaments without a title. But the master he is, he produced one of the most stunning comebacks, clinching the Hamburg Masters title, beating his clay court nemesis Rafael Nadal , and ending his 81 match unbeaten record on clay. Roland Garros beckons Federer this time more than ever. American men have had their worst year since 1972 Australian Open, when none of them got past the first round in the French Open, with Andy Roddick surrendering meekly.

Formula 1 : Lewis Hamilton has been a revelation and his having a dream debut having finished in the podium in all four of his races, even becoming the youngest ever driver to lead the standings momentarily. Mclaren are facing prospects of a ban after reports suggesting that they had ordered non-compete instructions to Hamilton with Alonso. Bad news and a bad example this is for F1, after the Ferrari debacle when Barrichello slowed down for Schumacher to win a few years back.

May Sports Round-up

May has seen its share of glories and failures in the sports arena. My incessant attempts at thwarting this boredom led me to taking an IQ test, by the International High IQ Society , the second largest IQ certifying organization in the world ( Mensa International is the largest, but does not allow free online IQ tests). The test involved 36 questions each to be answered within 90 seconds, covering 6 sublets such as verbal reasoning, mathematics, factual knowledge etc. They invite those who score above 124 in these tests (above the 95th percentile) to become their full-time paid members. I got 135.

Gratified !

I was extremely bored and was feeling my grey cells were really 'greying' . It was probably one of my fastest reads in recent times. Unlike other 500+ page novels, where the author deliberately uses 'fillers' in between the main story, disrupting the flow, 'Detective' is a page-turner. Hailey's detailed descriptions of the modus operandi of the detective Malcolm Ainslie along with the other characters is comprehensive and not verbose. With the characters gradually appearing, the reader is always kept guessing of their importance. With the protagonists intertwined in their own relationships and with duty beckoning, the story moves at break-neck speed leaving no stone unturned. 'Detective' is a great start to the holiday season.

(P.S : If you ask if this book is worth a read, my nods could be confused with head-banging)

Call it Dragon

No comparisons, Please. Diwali has been a festival of lights, with colourful dresses, loads of sweets, and entertainment. But the most amazing thing is the joy you share with people around you - your relatives, friends and neighbours. There is something magical about festivals. It uplifts even the most depressed of the lot and infuses the tonic of happiness and care. When other than this time would you have a nice chat with your neighbours, have a blast with friends, and happily gorge on the mouth watering delicacies? It is a wonderful experience. You pride around wearing new dresses, offer your prayers to God, and help the deprived by sharing your joy with them. We love the bright lights, but what makes us all most happy is the faces of the deprived which light up even more when we share our joy with them. Festivals eliminate caste , creed and any form of divide. We all get together and live life to the fullest!.. Happy Diwali! Yummy sweets staring at me.. here i come!

Trash the criticism.. the ICC Champions trophy is alive!

I have taken quite a long break from blogging, the reason being the very hectic schedule I had in the 5th qtr of MBA. I had wanted to pen down many things that had happened during that time but had always not found time as the thoughts were overwritten as time passed by. But the West Indies - Australia ICC Champions trophy cricket match in the league stages deserves mention. I have always liked the Windies for their relentless attempts at improvement despite their limited abilities. WI has become more of a batting side, far from their good ol' days of the deadly fast bowlers. But I saw some of that during that match. It wasnt the pace, but the way they kept their cool and delivered on the most important aspect of success in bowling - line, length and variation of pace. Imagine a relatively unknown bowler, Taylor, taking a hat-trick against the best team in the world, in a tournament they are most hungry to win! It couldnt have come at a better time to boost the Windies confidence. Australia however bounced back with a win over lackadaisical England. A depleted Pakistan humiliating an in-form Sri Lanka which bounced back over the earlier group leader New Zealand are other adrenaline gushers. The ICC Champions trophy is truly alive!.. We the fans decide its fate and we give a true thumbs up to it!.. GAME ON!

Orkut Mania- You are not what you are

I havent been able to blog for over a month. Work has been really hectic, hardly like the expected final yr of MBA. Having deadlines to meet practically every alternate day, my blog had to suffer my lowest priority. But i have made time to write this one. Some of the clear changes i have noticed is that my orkut activity has come down drastically. The number of ppl scrapping me has almost reached the number of defects in a six-sigma operation. I dont know if all are busy or stuff like that.. but one thing i learnt is ppl in orkut are just hell bent on somehow increasing their scrapcount at what ever cost.. now the latest craze is the fan base, the friend base, the no. of testimonials etc. Its funny at the same time pitiful to see ppl going for 'mutual fan' programs where unknown ppl strike a deal with each other to be each other's fans. Another case is some unknown chap sending messages to random ppl to write him/her testimonials. Orkut guys might be making big bucks but I dont know if this was orkut's mission, ie purpose of existence. When it started initially, it was used for the reason it was supposed to.. try to regain yr lost contacts.. establish yr networks again and so on. But now.. ppl boast of their scrap counts, fan list, no. of testimonials and stuff. After all thses guys think that no one is going too see me in person,, so what do i lose in selling some of my self-respect in desperatley seeking some reognition? ...whom are they trying to prove? what will these ppl feel inside abt themselves? why wear a mask and show that they are 'cool dudes' etc? i am sure in reality many of these ppl would hardly be the ones they project in these 'profiles'. I am also an orkutian, and I have learnt the hard way. I too was in this fad, but now realize that there is more to life than orkut. Ppl wake up! You dont need to scrap a person sitting inches away from you and increase yr scrap-count. Live a normal life! Use orkut for what its meant too! (i have done some thinking..and i have found some of the truth.. you do too.. and we ll all laugh at the masks we wear! )

A feat to emulate

While i was browsing the front page of ET, I saw that Indra Nooyi was appointed as Pepsi's next CEO. She is the first woman of Indian Origin to hold the top post in a Fortune 100 company. And what makes me even proud is that she is from good old chennai, from t nagar, did her schooling here in India in MCC and then went to Yale. Some of her excerpts are enough to motivate even the graveyard inhabitants. "Since I was a woman, I was colored and not of Anmerican Orign, it was thrice as difficult, so I worked thrice as hard to get to this level". It just reminds me of the Stockdale Paradox and she seems to have exemplified that. She had the faith that she would prevail, yet accustomed herself to the difficulties faced in Pepsi and emereged a true winner. India has really gained entry into the top echelons of the corporate world. IK's feat is one to emulate and one to benchmark for each budding manager.

"Whew!" for some, "Oh no!" for many

We, the 2nd year students of DoMs, IITM had been expecting this comprehensive 22 subject viva covering all the first year subjects to be an easy go if not for a cakewalk. But we were in quite a shock when most of us found that we had to repeat the whole exercise. The department is making a bold step to raise the bar higher so that the students sail thorugh when it comes to fundamental concepts. In my case, I walked into a panel in the which the student success rate was in single digits. When i came out after a 45 minute grilling, i said only one word, -"Whew". I was thorugh. But my reactions were not shared by many. I am sure that the exercise has clearly pointed out each one's shortcomings and brought us all down to earth. We ll be better equipped to handel the placements and definitely wiser!

Can Technical Incompetence curb freedom of speech?

Most of the bloggers in India, including me are victimised by this 'Banning of blogs'. Confusing signals sent from the govt not clearly specifying which blogs to ban and technical incompetence from the ISPs has resulted in a complete blanket ban on all blog sites. Is this the way to showcase to the world that India is such a great democracy and a technical powerhouse? When the ISPs say that they cant blog specific blogs, how did they do so now? There is little to say positive about this whole incident. It has caused outrage among many bloggers and has definitely not gone down well. I hope such acts are not repeated. After all, how will the ban be effective when the blogs can be accessed through proxy servers? Its just to say the bloggers are more cyber-savvy than the ISPs themselves!

Travails of the mind

There are many feelings which cannot be expressed in words. But i am trying to get as close to it as possible, just to get a better understanding, i meant better and not complete. When one is elated at a point of time, for no reason that the mind can resonably deduce, there comes a sudden lull; a blankness, which cannot be described , as in a TV screen which does not get any cable input and only raw noise. Its like a transition stage and it waits for a catalyst, one which satisfies the selective permeability to change the mental status from blankness only to worse and nothing else. 'Worse' may not be a good choice, but I meant a state where the mind comes out of blankness and lets the initiators of the 'unwanted' feelings enter. Some action somewhere, of someone or something , remotely known who has not been on touch and has effecively been an inert element to this mind, causes this drastic and dramatic change. The mind begins to work overtime , conjuring up images it knows it hates to see, which , might be completely improbable, but remotely possible, which is the driving force for this very generation. Thats the point when the conscious self loses control and surrenders to the automatic clockwork inside. The body and the senses are at high alert state and are extremely vulnerable to any outside acitivity. Yet , like the common cold, it cures itself faster if left undisturbed. The senses slowly return to normal and the mind gains control. Its more predictable if that mind is yours, you know what is coming next but cant stop it, at your current state, save you have conquered your self.
" Why do ask me what will I do when you already know what I would choose?? "
- Neo to the Oracle

Magic and Information

When I woke up today morning, i experienced a barrage of thoughts, entirely random but still had some common thread connecting to them. When I first decided that my blog space would have a central core theme of the travails of the human mind, I later thought that it might have been just an impulsive acton. But my intuition, which drove me to that decision proved right again today. After a hiatus, I am revisiting the theme again. The thread connecting today's thoughts was how the human mind treated magic and information. Magic is always relative to the human mind's extent of making inferences from the inputs it gets from the senses. I remember that the basic theme of the Matrix revolved around the mind. When Morpheus tells Neo, "Free your mind, and you will realize the truth" drove home the point. John Travolta in Swordfish says, " Mis-direction! What the eyes see, the ears here, the mind believes!". The first automobile was magic to those who hadnt known them before. When Sherlock Holmes says " I often feel my deductions are simple once I explain them, and so do others." MAgic is hiding the information, hiding the facts. Its magic for us because we dont know how it happened, while the magician knows how. Information is the ultimate weapon. The very form of differentiation arises through the imbalance in information dissemination. Thats why even in tamil, there is a popular saying - "Kannal paarpadhum poi, kaadhal ketpadhum poi. Theera visarippade mei!" ( What your eyes see are false, what your ears hear are false, reasearch only will lead to the truth). So before we judge and form opinions we need to go beyond our initial inputs from the senses to get the true picture. After all, how was it decided that if an unbiased coin was tossed, the head and the tail have an equal chance of apperaing? There were several attempts, and exhaustive testing and verification.

Awesome sports weekend!

June 30 and July 1st have seen some of the best matches and sporting events all packed in a span of 48 hours. The World cup had its share of nail-biting nerve racking moments. England met their nemesis yet again in penalites, Scolari and Christiano Ronaldo. What a guy, giving a wink after Ronney's sending off! Then came the biggest upset of the WOrld Cup! 5-time champions Brazil were outplayed and outclassed by a set of 11 players from France, who were considered to be one of the oldest teams in the competition and could have faced an early exit save their 2-0 win over Togo. And then cricket. India achieved a place in the history books when it won the final test in Kingston to record its first series win in the West Indies in 35 years! And wasnt Dravid the Wall brilliant! His knock were one of the best in such conditions and he himself rated them so! Next to the Championships - Wimbledon. Andre Agassi, a living legend who was one of the very few to have won all the 4 grand slams bowed out of the tournament, And who sent him packing?? Rafael Nadal. The king of clay is coming of age in the grass court and is on the right track to challenge FedEx. And finally, the king of F1 returned, with Schumi posting a flawless victory in Indianapolis! ANd he led all the way right from the first qualifying session! What a weekend!

The beautiful game

Well, I have always a big fan of cricket and tennis and both games i enjoy a lot. But then a thought occurred to me as to why footbal aka soccer has the greatest fan folllowing in the world? With the World cup in progress.. i decided to really try to analyse the reasons behind this mania! THough i really started gettin into this game quite a few years back, thanks to CAS in our city, watching football league matches was luxury! So the WC gave me a real chance to get to know more. And I now admit that I have completely amazed by the sheer passion and spirit of the game. The opening match's first goal, when Philip Lahm sent the 8 inch diameter white ball with the adidas logo written all over it, and was reasearched on for months, was simply ming boggling. The way the ball curved, as shown in ultramotion was felt as if my heart beats had suddenly gone out of rhythm. Soccer is a wonderful game , easy to comprehend yet complicated. For some , it may be a show of skill, for some it may lead to topics of research in physics. A 90 minute game is like an exhilarating thrill ride. I thought so far, that only the moments when goals are scored, will the matches be really exciting. But i really learnt what defence meant! An talk of comebacks, by the socceroos in their opening game.. It was the first time I showed a conspicuous gesture during the game's progress. Now I have completely immerserd myself in thie greatest show on earth and even more by the beautiful game. I am off now to select my players for the fantasy world cup game.

'Auto'cra(c/z)y

We have heard of thieves and robbers in our lives. A thief is one who steals by stealth. But most of Chennaiites, atleast once in their lifetime would have voluntarily searched for such a thief and given him money!.. Its the auto-rickshaw driver. I might be harsh in branding them as such, but from my sample size i can be sure that it is truly representative of the population and a significant majority do fall under this title!.. My personal experiences have driven me to this extent! Some incidents which i would narrate now would corroborate my views!.. These guys completely exploit the situation whenever they find that we really need their service!..Once I had to shift some luggage to a place barely half a kilometer away. The auto driver demanded 20 bucks!.. considering the price of petrol as an upward estimnate of 50 bucks and the auto mileage at the lower estimate of 20 kmpl, half a km costs him 5 bucks!.. imagine a 300% margin! And when i argued , the justification he gave enraged me further!.. "Sir, I am not supposed to carry luggage!.. so i charge extra for that!"... If he shouldnt carry luggage( and I was unaware if that).. he should have denied me.. but fleecing like this gives a very bad impression and arouses hatred even among the most tolerant minds. They consider themselves to be completely indispensable and being backed by political bigwigs, roam around the city like 'dadas'!... These rob(b)in' hoods are notorious for their wonderful reasons of overcharging!.. Dont know the language, overcharge; Dont know the place, overcharge; Are old and cant argue, overcharge!.. I am ashamed of such behavior and hope that tomorrow would dawn better, but i doubt if it will!

Idle mind.. why a devil's workshop? why not?

its quite common to say that when u r idle, the mind will try to come out of it by trying to find instances which are most easy to remember..and mostly they are those which the same mind would like to forget. How is that what is least wanted comes up first? is it another LIFO( Least Interested First OUt) phenomenon thats working inside? Well, its just that the mind takes so much effort in forgetting it, that it pays so much attentions to it, and thereby end up remembering most of it. How many of us can clearly narrate good events as we do for bad?.. Here's how I think we can cope with it. A workshop for a devil happens only when we actually indicate our thoughts by actuon. This is where we can exercise control. first, try to keep the mind occuppied. Of course, since we cant do that all ways, so we cant help getting idle for a while, and so we cant stop to remember what we'd like to forget... lets stop it with the thinking.. Its bad only if others know what you'r thinking.. and Thank God they cant unless you wish it to be.. so best to nip it in the bud!.. so will it become a devil's workshop?... we can have our say there!

Blogging? Me? Yes or No?

Well, after my initial spurt of blogs, I have again ran out of events/views/opinions to write any further blogs.. or haven't I? If I havent, why didnt I put them down?.. Not writing a blog for so long has actually made me think of the reason, and I actually end up writing one finally! I am still unable to pin point the exact cause for my 'nonchalance'(NC).. But I can say for sure that one factor never dominated this result. There were very many pf those who ensured in their every little way to prevent what i felt to be put down on the computer screen. Blogging is viewed as the outcome of the 'freaking-out' of the mind, but how many of us write blogs which we dont want others to read? we all would like it to be read (how of many of you actually read this is another issue altogether!) and given a feedback. But blogs are NOT a virtual diary. A person generally does not put down incidents or instances which might be of great interest, and considerably appreciated by others, but that would preferred to kept private. Thats a major factor for my 'NC'( I am using it within quotes as it highly subjective).Well, whats the use of writing a blog which is not going to be recognised, no feedback given and just for the blogger himself to look back? My blogs were initially those which would mean great importance only to myself, but I too veered into the 'conventional blogger style'. Blogging needs to be redefined, so do my 'blogs'.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sidravi.blogspot.com/2006/05/blogging-me-yes-or-no.html' title='Blogging? Its been a few weeks, but its so firmly etched in my mind that I remember every detail. it was the day when I was QuizMaster, playing host to my classmates at IIT. It took nearly 10 days of toil and sweat to make this quiz materialise. Even after I had got the Biz Quiz questions ready, I had to really persevere to get my classmates to attend it, primarily 'cause there was no consensus on the timing. Finally , I managed to grab the class's attention and fixed a time. when I started the quiz, I was simply amazed. The turnout was much higher than expected and the guys were bubbling with enthusiasm. I started off with full vigour and there was no looking back. I had planned for 6 rounds, with a lot of help my dear friend, who kept the scores. The class was divided into 4 teams, and it was nail-biting, every round. I gave out toffees to the good answers, of course , what was good was up to me to decide, The Quiz Master is God! The rounds went at lightning speed and had all the moments of a nerve cracker of a contest. 2 teams were neck and neck and the 2nd placed team literally won off the lat question!.. There were cheers all around and more than any one else, I felt overjoyed! I had done it, juggling different questions, keeping the audience interested and most of all, bringing our class together and even managing to get accolades from the quiz buffs of the class. It was a day to remember and i hope the quizzing culture has been kicked off!

Endulkar?

Sachin Tendulkar has made tremendous contributions to Indian cricket. He has made many a record, whether it be cricket, endorsement or govt sops(remember the ferrari row?). He has infact come to a stage where his mere appearance in the cricketing field creates records. But the question now is , is he doing just that?.. Merely appearing in the Mumbai test and becoming the most capped player?. Imagine India's hero being booed on his way back to the pavillion, that too by his very own home crowd. His batting performance has failed to evoke the kind of fire in the heart of the cricket fan that it once did. He had quite a while, before laboring to his 35th century, and then things didnt appear rosy after. This series, his best score has been a difficult 28 not out, the rest coming in single digits. There have been many who still vouch that he is just down but not out, he would roar back and so on. Buts lets see.. After his string of injuries, he has considerably toned down his agression , or rather even fallen into the 'meek' territory. With his contemporaries such as Ganguly being shown the door, probably his time too has come. The one run which he scored in Mumbai would haunt him, not just that he didnt score enough, but as to how to struggled to even face deliveries, which a few years ago, he would have sent packing to the fence. Tendulkar a prized wicked yet?..... I hope its still yes, but that hope is fading... I just hope that he rebuffs my inferences with his bat..

Bank Ordeal

Today will be quite a day to remember for me. It was an hour long ordeal in a nationalised bank, to obtain a pass book entry. I went very early in the morning, at about 8:30. The bank was under renovation, and when i entered, it looked as if it was going to be torn down. The officials, i could see, were unprepared for what was expected, that customers would find this grossly inconvenient. When i entered, i found my footwear stamping on something squishy; it was the freshly laid cement on the flooring inside. There were hardly any officials inside, and i found 2 people who were trying to begin their day's work. I was instructed to go to the first floor to obtain the entry, and when i went there, i found half a dozen people waiting in a queue for a person who wasn't there, the one who would record their pass books. The fans were not working, and we were sweating it out, when a man came and sat in the counter, and said, "This counter is for all savings bank transactions except recording entries, please go down". An elderly gentleman next to me sounded irritated when he said that we were being taken for a ride. We marched our way downstairs, only to find no one. After 15 minutes, the officials were trying to find out what was wrong with the computer. Then they made a startling discovery that the spike-buster was not working and fixed it with great effort. At last, now it will be over in a few minutes, i thought. But No.. The person in the counter was desperately searching for a mouse pad, poor lady, she did not know that an optical mouse requires only a flat surface such as the table, and does not mandate a mouse pad. Finally, when all was well, the first pass-book got stuck in the printer, which started making all sorts of weird noises, like a formula-1 car in the race track. The counter person called for help, then a guy came and pulled out the pass book with all force, that it almost tore. I felt as if i was in the middle of a remote village, where people were just learning to use computers. There is a serious issue here. When a majority of the employees in the bank counters have been used to giving the manual system are suddenly asked to switch over to computers, and perform operations so simple just as entering numbers, their mindsets just do not seem to aid them. I just pray that today's was just a one-off case. Imagine standing in a queue that does not move, and even when it does, it ensures that the cost of getting the work done is greater than the return got.

The Jungle - Today

In the jungle,

Every morning when a gazelle wakes up, it knows that it has to outrun the fastest lion to stay alive.
Every morning when the lion wakes up, it knows that it has to outrun the slowest gazelle, or else it would starve to death.

It doesn't matter if you are a gazelle or a lion, you'd better be running!

That is life, the jungle, today.

The Best Cricket ODI ever..

It was simply an ace, amazing, astonishing, astounding, awe-inspiring, extraordinary, fab, fabulous, fantasmo, far-out, glorious, great, prodigious, superhuman, unreal, wonderful, and incredible one day cricket match I have ever witnessed in my entire life. How many times have we seen a world record broken, created, and again broken in a span of 3 hours in cricketing hiostory?.. Australia the world champions would have liked to remember 12th March 2006 in their lives, but would have like to have forgotten it just a few hours later. They scored a record 434/4 in 50 overs, and hold your breath.. LOST!!!!... South Africa have proved that they can create a record of records.. I am already too overwhelmed by this performance to continue further.. just read on this article i came across..

SOUTH AFRICA CREATE ODI HISTORY!!!!!
South Africa clinched a dramatic 3-2 series victory over Australia after what will surely come to be known as the greatest one-day international of all time.
Ricky Ponting seemed to have led Australia to an unassailable position when his 164 off 105 balls set up a ODI record total of 434 for four.
But Herschelle Gibbs led the fightback with an exhilarating 175 off 111 balls and Mark Boucher hit the winning runs as South Africa remarkably broke the record once more, scoring 438 to win with one ball and one wicket to spare.
Boucher finished 50 not out off 43 balls to see his side home, while number 11 Makhaya Ntini scored the most important single of his career to date.
Gibbs' 175 was the highest individual score in a ODI in South Africa - the 32-year-old smashed 21 fours and seven sixes in his breakneck innings, before lofting Andrew Symonds straight to Brett Lee at long off.
He shared a stand of 187 for the second wicket with captain Graeme Smith, who bludgeoned 90 off only 55 balls as his country set about overhauling Australia's mammoth total.
Johan van der Wath then slammed 35 off 18 balls, including three sixes, to resurrect the run chase after a steady fall of wickets in the latter half of the innings.
Australia's Nathan Bracken, amazingly, claimed bowling figures of five for 67 in the midst of the mayhem, but dropped a simple chance proffered by Gibbs on 130.
Mick Lewis claimed another, unwanted, record with the most expensive bowling figures in ODI history, his 10 overs costing 113 runs.
It all looked so different at the halfway stage after Ponting's explosive innings left South Africa facing the biggest run chase in ODI history.
The captain smashed 13 fours and nine sixes - itself an Australian record - and was ably supported by the rest of the top order.
Openers Simon Katich and Adam Gilchrist laid the foundations with a stand of 97 before Gilchrist fell for 55 off 44 balls.
Katich went on to make 79 off 90 balls as he also shared in a 119-run stand with his captain, while Mike Hussey belted 81 off just 51 balls and Andrew Symonds clubbed 27 off 13.
Roger Telemachus was the pick of a demoralised South African bowling attack with two for 87 off his 10 overs, but the real drama was still to come as Gibbs launched the hosts' unbelievable recovery.

Here are some post match reactions.....

Mark Boucher hailed South Africa's stunning 3-2 one-day series victory over Australia as "one of my best moments in cricket" after hitting the winning runs to secure a last-gasp record-breaking victory.
Australia captain Ricky Ponting seemed to have led Australia to an unassailable position when his 164 off 105 balls set up a ODI record total of 434 for four.
But Herschelle Gibbs led the fightback with an exhilarating 175 off 111 balls and Boucher hit the winning runs as South Africa remarkably broke the record, scoring 438 to win with one ball and one wicket to spare.
"It's one of my best moments in cricket so far," Boucher told Sky Sports.
"We always knew we'd be up against it. We tried to keep it simple, we knew we had to get a good start and Herschelle and Graeme (Smith) did fantastically well. It was something special to watch. It's fantastic.
"It's a bit of a short boundary but you can't take anything away from the Aussies, they played fantastically.
"I'm lost for words."
Boucher is now looking forward to what promises to be an entertaining Test series.
"Test cricket is a different ball game but I really enjoyed it tonight and hopefully we can take some of that momentum into the Test series."
Ponting was gracious in defeat and paid tribute to Gibbs' stunning role in the match."I'm sure everybody here today had one of the greatest days of their lives," he said in the post-match presentation, televised by Sky Sports.
"It was a great game of cricket.
"We played really well and got an unbelievably big total but Herschelle and the boys have just been too good. Herschelle deserves (the man of the match award) more than me after making 175 and being on the winning team.
"You couldn't ask for a more exciting one-day match, it had plenty of boundaries, plenty of sixes, it was great."
After his brilliant knock Gibbs said: "I think I'm going to keep smiling for a while - I'll have no energy tomorrow."Cricket is getting bizarre these days with some of the scores made.
"We needed something like that from somebody and it happened to be my day today," he said.
South Africa all-rounder Shaun Pollock was named man of the series and said on Sky Sports: "You feel on top of the world, to see a game like that was great.
"The boys came through and we managed to win the series. It's been nice, I've enjoyed it. It's a pity I couldn't get out there today, it looked like a good runway for bowlers."
Winning captain Smith admitted it had looked bleak when Australia posted the massive 434 total.
"I think we were a little down in the dressing room at that stage," he confessed.
"But it was an unbelievable wicket, credit to the groundsmen. And what an atmosphere.
"It's huge (the victory). We have got to come back down to earth. We're all over the moon and want to savour the moment."

The Matrix Uncovered 7: The Twins

They are exiled programs that emulate the human myth of ghosts as the Oracle explained. They are programs behaving badly. Persephone killed one of the Merovingian's bodyguards with a silver bullet because he was emulating a werewolf. So if the Twins could phase into ghost form, why didn't he when his arm was trapped in the door of the garage? Was it because he was wounded or because he can't phase when his arm is trapped? No of course not. The doors of that building, when shut, always led somewhere else (usually in the mountains) when opened again without the Keymaker's key. The architect was the one who created the Matrix; the co-creator is neither Persephone nor the Oracle. Both of them are only programs that have a purpose in the matrix, just like the rest. The Architect is in charge of the Matrix world and the co-creator is in charge of Zion. She has almost the same age as the Architect. Therefore, that woman is the Head Counselor, the only woman of importance that lives in Zion and the one who asked for the two captains to volunteer at the council meeting. She's the one who knew all along about the Matrix. She was the one who told Zion's Defense Minister to cool off and to let Morpheus do his work so things could go as planned. Or alternatively, it could indeed be the Oracle. She is the only program that truly wants humans to have a free choice... at the same time, she sees the future, because she knows the program code - she is like God - which is why Seraph protects her

The Matrix Uncovered 4 : The Equation

The Keymaker refers to the window of time to open the door to the mainframe as 314 seconds. 3.14 is pi to three sig. figs., or the number of radians in half a circle. Half a circle is like the cross-section of a womb, similar to the alcove of Neo and Trinity's love scene - conceiving the next One? "NEO", incidentally, is an anagram of "ONE". Trinity and Neo - one on one; a choice - one or one. Leads us to 101. "101" is mentioned numerous times in Matrix 1 and Reloaded. Neo's room at the beginning, Merovingian is on the 101st floor, the 101 freeway of the car chase in Reloaded, then when Trinity is hacking into the power plant system, she resets the password to Z10N0101. Freaky. Indicates that she is a program because that's not some random password she's put in. 101 is binary for 5, which in zero based binary counting: 000 is 1, 001, is 2, 010 is 3, 011 is 4, 100 is 5, 101 is 6 - And this is ! the 6th version of the Matrix! Then there's 303. 303 is the room Neo got shot in Matrix 1, the Oracle lives in room 303, it's also the hotel room number Trinity is in in Matrix 1 and it's seen at the end when Neo fights the Agents and Smith and begins to literally see the code that makes up the Matrix. 101 x 3 = 303, a trilogy, 3 + 0 + 3 = 6 = the 6th Matrix. Trinity means 3.

The Matrix Uncovered 3 : The Anomaly

The anomaly is all the humans that do not accept the Matrix. The Architect says "Your life is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of the matrix. You are the eventuality of an anomaly, which despite my sincerest efforts I have been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. While it remains a burden to sedulously avoid it, it is not unexpected, and thus not beyond a measure of control." This includes Neo, but Neo's Matrix avatar is attached with the One program so that he can follow his purpose as explained earlier in part 1. However, he is also supposed to protect himself and destroy anything that gets in his way - i.e., Agent Smith - so that he may fulfill his purpose. Further proving Neo - and other non-accepters of the Matrix - are the anomaly, the Architect says, "Your life is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent t! o the programming of the matrix." The clue here is Neo's program name - "The One". Take one-third for example. 1 over 3 is 0.33333 recurring. A computer cannot deal with recurring numbers, so must accept a limit, let's say 0.33333 for argument's sake. Multiply by 3, you get 0.99999 - never 1.00000, where has the "remainder" 0.00001 (One) gone? This is the limitation of computers, this is the mathematical imprecision inherent in programming (of the Matrix) and the eventuality of the One anomaly unable to be eliminated.

The Matrix Uncovered 2 : Agent Smith

Agent Smith is the only "human" in this world. He's the one spreading himself like a virus replicating himself over and over until the Matrix will finally get overloaded and fail. Smith is the one who wants to get out of the Matrix for good. He said so in the first Matrix, "I must get out of here, I must get free! And in this mind, is the key," squeezing Morpheus's temples, "my key! Once Zion is destroyed, there is no need for me to be here!" Smith knows that by killing Neo he can escape the Matrix because Neo is the key to resetting the Matrix, or to shut it off. It was originally killing Neo (in the first Matrix) that allowed Smith to become powerful (cloning ability) - so killing Neo again will allow him to gain Neo's powers completely, and thus gain the power to shut down the Matrix. So where the hell did Smith come from if he wants to destroy the Matrix? He's obviously not meant to be there - he's a computer virus as he has every characteristic of a virus - he multiplies and spreads and infects (and emulates) other programs like one. He is exactly as he described humans at the end of the first Matrix - "You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern.I'm betting on humans in the real real world, i.e., outside of Zion and the Matrix. They're at war with the machines and trying to destroy them by infecting them with this virus - Agent Smith. So the irony with this theory is that Agent Smith represents the human race!! Neo represents the machines! Agent Smith says to Neo just after he's seen the Oracle that he became free when Neo destroyed him in the first Matrix (remember when Neo entered his body and exploded him from inside out) - as a virus, Smith has the ability to "inherit" other programs' abilities and thus inherited some of Neo's.

The Matrix Uncovered 1 : The One and The Choice

"The One" is a program, but has to be "attached" to someone in the Matrix. So Mr. Anderson got it in the 6th version of the Matrix. Then "The One" program's purpose is to allow Zion to be destroyed then to rebuild it. The reason for this is because of anomalies - the 1% of humans that don't accept the Matrix. These are all brought out of the Matrix program and into the Zion program by the "Morpheus" program and other similar "ship captain" programs. Then once all the anomalies are out of the Matrix (and in Zion), that is the time for Zion to be destroyed, thus killing all the anomalies off. The Matrix is then upgraded, thus creating the next version of the Matrix, but Zion must be rebuilt so that the next lot of anomalies can be brought out again so that they can be destroyed. This is the feedback loop, and is the reason to retain a handful of people so that Zion can be rebuilt. So this is why Neo said the prophecy was a lie - the One's purpose was not to end the war as the prophecy stated. Unfortunately, "The One" program must be re-used each time, or copied, so it can be "attached" to a new anomaly inside the Matrix. So what happens to the old "The One" program? It faces deletion, and as the Oracle explained, it goes into exile instead, just like the French bloke (the Merovingian) did. He was the first One (probably from the second version of the Matrix), and once he fulfilled his duty, he became an exile program and "abdicated" his "Oneness" by choosing Persephone and power. This is evident in the bogs when Persephone asks Neo to kiss her. She says she wants him to kiss her so she can feel what it is like again to be kissed by something close to human, just like the Merovingian used to be. Then she says to Trinity that she envies her, but that these things are not meant to last. So the Merovingian used to be just like Neo - a One - thus proving further the feedback loop explained earlier. The correct door in the Architect's room: Now there are two possibilities here: 1. All the previous One's chose the right door allowing a "temporary dissemination" of their code into the Matrix (i.e., the code they "carry" thus indicating Neo is indeed human), then he must select (unplug) 23 people from the Matrix to rebuild Zion. This takes away the possibility that stories from previous rebuilds of Zion will be carried through. But Morpheus indicated in the first Matrix that this is the case anyway. He said, "there was a man born inside, able to change things, it was he who freed the first of us," - basically the One previous to Neo. And this proves that the previous One chose the right door also. Neo's purpose is also to choose the right door, but he does not because he faces deletion afterwards and has the choice of going into exile - programs choosing to go into exile is the one thing that can't be accounted for in program parameters. Thus, he chooses the left door instead this time. How was Neo able to c! hoose the other door? Because of his extrem e willpower? - Even the Architect indicated that he'd noticed this - "Interesting. That was quicker than the others." Or more likely, because the Oracle upgraded his coding with the candy on the park bench. The candy/cookie was a method to change the One's program. She said he has made a believer out of her - this is quite human like and perhaps the previous One's didn't accept the upgrade candy, now she has hope... hope that Neo will finally choose the other door. 2. All the previous One's chose the left door, saving Trinity and letting Zion fall. So this time is no different. But the Architect does say, "You are here because Zion is about to be destroyed. Its every living inhabitant terminated, its entire existence eradicated," and also, "this will be the sixth time we have destroyed it, and we have become exceedingly efficient at it," - assuming the Architect isn't lying, then they have already destroyed Zion (i.e., Zion has fallen) five times - i.e., the result of going through the left door. Morpheus and Trinity are programs. Morpheus's purpose was to find the One and deliver him to the Architect. Trinity's purpose is to control the One by getting in love with him. Trinity is supposed to be the mother of the new One every time the Matrix is Reloaded. That's why she was named Trinity. The Architect says, "she is going to die, and there is noth i! ng that you can do to stop it." He was correct though because she did die just like Neo did in the first Matrix (Oracle said he or Morpheus would, and she didn't lie, but he came back to life). Trinity dies, but comes back to life (we are using medical definition of death in all this of course!). The Architect has already laid down an ultimatum for Neo choosing the left door: The Architect - "Failure to comply with this process will result in a cataclysmic system crash killing everyone connected to the matrix, which coupled with the extermination of Zion will ultimately result in the extinction of the entire human race." Neo - "You won't let it happen, you can't. You need human beings to survive." The Architect - "There are levels of survival we are prepared to accept. However, the relevant issue is whether or not you are ready to accept the responsibility for the death of every human being in this world." Looking at this further, the Architect does say "coupled" with the extermination of Zion will the human race be exterminated. So he says everyone connected to the Matrix will die, but if Zion is not exterminated, the human race will not necessarily die. Also, there is likely to be a time window between not going through the right door, and the cataclysmic crash, thus allowing Neo to unplug as many as possible from the Matrix, then those people won't die. This will be the start of the next Zion. As for the Matrix, a cataclysmic crash doesn't mean the end of the Matrix - just needs rebooting or reloading!

mind reloaded: Coming Soon....The Matrix Uncovered : A Blog Series

whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com

Coming Soon....The Matrix Uncovered : A Blog Series

This series of blogs will deal with one of the most famous movie series.. featured in the cover of TIME.. Expect the unexpected is the new jingle. But if you expect the unexpected, then what is the unexpected?.. everything in the realm of the imaginable, need to come to reality, for the sole reason.. variety.. i want more.. everybody wants more. Just imagine in the rapid increase in product variants in brands.. just for a toothpaste, we have hundreds of variants.. variations in colour, taste, feel, freshness and what not!.. But so many variants actually leaves the customer in a sort of a dilemma.. the customer might feel..' after all whats the difference in a light blue variant and a dark blue variant?'.. and the varieties go overboard,, ironical since what was demanded, was given, and once it was given, it was no more needed!.. variety is wanted as a want that would never be satisfied.. unless we know what we really want..

Spending time with the self

In this fast-paced world, when we wake up, we are so hard wired to just rush into things from time zero. We brush our teeth as a mundane activity, bathe, dress up and be of to work or school. We are constantly bombarded with facts, figures, data, estimates, forecasts and of course, a whole range of opinions. Do we really spend time with ourselves? How many of us, even try to come out of this world web of stress, to just take a few deep breaths, and just think of what we did through the day?.. Of course, most of us are so exhausted that we dont even find time to think of ourselves. We just feel that all hell has broken loose, and become a victim of forgetting our own selves. We should definitely spend time with ourselves; Every one of us has a purpose in life, and we need to check if we are on the right track, in our own opinion. Just getting to know our self better, would be just great!.. and by the way, who am I?.. oops!.. i am off to meet me!

Beyond the invisible.. chaos

Thoughts do not always result in actions. Perceptions vary. These are well known. But what about communication that is clear cut in the brain while processing but fails to be received in the way it should be. There are certain aspects which, for explanation , needs to be explored , but with vain. Chaos is the cause, chaos is the catalyst, chaos is the process. Chaotic situtations, (what i refer here is what happens in the mind of people), often do not result in the same level of physical exhibition in the human mind. 'Ignorance is bliss!'.. this statement is very true. Just imagine if one could gain access to what is happening in evryone else's mind... what they think etc..The persone could fall a victim to sheer information overload, perceptions that change by the second, and then chaos. There is a limit to the depth to which we can go, but do we know it?.. too much is too bad, it is said, but is it always?... i can feel the chaos in the reader's mind.. neurons at overtime..

Biz quiz debut

I could never forget the day when I made it to my first B-school quiz final. It was actually touch and go, with my team mate Syam providing vital breakthroughs. IFMR had hosted their b-school fest in Feb 2006, and it was like a dream come true for me to be in the finals. Actually, IITM had 4 teams out of the 6 finalists. The questions were very interestig and challenging, and we finished a respectable 4th. I can remember how some of our answers were literal improvisations, and we did get most of them right!.. We could have done much better, had it not been for the bright young kids from Anna University, who just gave the answers before we could, when the questions were passed. It was a great learning experience and a very self-satisfying moment.

I am back.. blogging... my views

I had started this blog quite some time ago. But I was unable to sustain the initial spark which i had months ago. Somehow, I feel this could be my real first step in blogging. Some of my classmates are into blogging seriously. More than anything else, I feel blogging enables a person to be more systematic, at least from what I understand, in documenting activities, view points etc. It provides an organised way to record incidents, activities and of course one's outbursts and viewpoints.Well, thats it for the intro.

my first post

well, this is my first post...need some blogging tips...
